In one sense, animus has a negative connotation and means ill will or open hostility. For example, "Spartan animus towards anything non-Spartan is reknowned." The word, however, can become confusing when when used in it other sense which mean disposition or motivation: "Alexander's animus to conquer the world is reknowned." The original Latin means "motivation or intellect." How it came to mean ill-will is reflected in the word animosity.
_______________________________

In science (most particularly biology) it means the study of the form or structure of phenomena. Morphological biology studies the form and structure of living things, such as how bacteria are structured. Linguistically, morphology refers to the how words are structured and concerns itself with elements that act as building blocks for words. For example, linguistic morphology is interested in how "asks" differs from "asked" to indicated a specific sense of time based out of the root "ask." It comes from the Greek morphe--"form" combined with the suffix -ology--the study of a particular subject.
_______________________________

When used in physics or sciences such as astronomy, perturbation means a deviation of a system (sometimes slight). For example, in astronomy gravity occasionally causes deviations in the orbit of a celestial body. This is called a perturbation. However, when referring to human beings, it means mental unease or anxiety. A person's perturbations, therefore, are disturbances of her or his emotional state. While this disturbance is relevant to deviation, as an emotion perturbation appears to relate much more closely to the Latin which the word derives from: "to disturb greatly." Generally we are more familiar with the verb form "to perturb" when talking about states of mind. Being perturbed is not generally seen as something slight or minor, but it certainly is enraged either.
_______________________________

(See watt below.) The editors of Word! feel compelled to make a correction in calling haze a euphemism of smog. Haze can, indeed, be caused by smoke particles. It can also be caused by dust or water or anything in the atmosphere that "obscures the normal clarity of the sky" (Wikipedia: Haze). We apologize for the error, but still feel that "haze" is used as a way of making pollution sound somehow pleasant. Haze comes from the Old English haswa which means "dusky."
_______________________________

There is a great deal of folk etymology surrounding this word. Folk etymology for those of you who don't know, is a commonly accepted, but difficult to verify origin of a word. In this case, the word bookworm is often said to be derived from the an actual insect that infects books. There is an insect (anobium or furniture beatle) that may also chow down on your favorite book, but it turns out that the holes that one might occasionally find in books are most likely not caused by a single so-called bookworm insect, but more likely by a host of insects including, I hate to say it, cockroach larvae and the insect silverfish. The application of bookworm to human beings is supposedly a connotation or metaphorical use (like we've already seen with the word rampant.) Some dispute this connection in that according to the OED, bookworm seems to have been first applied to humans and then was only later (1855 to be exact) applied to insects that devour the pages of a book).
_______________________________

Literally, rampant, means to rear up on hind legs. Thus a rampant bear, is one that is standing up like this:

Although this photograph (kindly borrowed from flickr user Sponng's photostream) does not have the more fierce connotations that rampant gives in heraldry:

Now this imaginary bear is fiercly, if not awkwardly, going after someone.

Since human beings, when standing, are necessarily always upright, the use of the word rampant is generally metaphorical. When people are rampant they are either fierce or out-of-control. Rampant hordes, for example, indicates a crazed mass of people who no doubt will act unpredictably and tear your castle apart if given half the chance. The phrase to run rampant shows this too (and is particuarly amusing since we humans always run rampant.)

Rampant derives from the French meaning to rear up or, strangely enough, to crawl.

Now a note of closure: this is the last Word of the day for 2006 as it is our last day of operation in the SLCC Student Writing Center. We wish you a happy holiday season and the gift of peace.
_______________________________

This Greek suffix is a common attachment in medical words to indicate pain: neuralgia is a good example of that. Medicine's Classical heritage (think Hippocrates) is shown through its prolific use of Greek words.
_______________________________

For example, the denotation of the word red is the exact definition of the color: "Having, or characterized by, the colour which appears at the lower or least refracted end of the visible spectrum, and is familiar in nature as that of blood, fire, various flowers (as the poppy and rose) and ripe fruits (whence the frequent similes red as blood, fire, a rose, cherry, etc)" (OED, "red") . A connotation of red, however, would be a member of the Communist Party since red connotes a communist because of the Communist Party's adoption of the color red as its party's color. By association or connotation, members of the Party were called "reds."
_______________________________

These days it is usually used in a phrase that includes "of [appropriate possessive subject/prounoun] existence." For example the sentence "Dogs are the bane of Mary's existence" uses this construction. Often the word "bane" sounds archaic or old-fashioned used without the rest of the phrase. For instance, "Dogs are Mary's bane" certainly sounds old-fashioned at best and odd/incorrect at worst, but it is a perfectly fine sentence.

Interestingly bane is a very old word in English and comes from bana which means something that causes death or a poison. This can be heard in the Hallowe'en classic wolf'sbane. To this amateur etymologist, bana sounds like a name for a demon in Dungeon's and Dragons.
_______________________________

When you eschew something you give it the brush-off. It can indicate a friendly or agreeable person or place as in "Kumar was very convivial person" or "Texas is a convivial state." Take care when using convivial, however, as it also means a fondness for partying, feasting, or general merry-making. It also describes such a feast itself. In other words, convivial doesn't just mean friendly but in its fuller sense means socialble in that a person who is convivial is likely to be at a party eating, drinking, and talking or a convivial place is a good location to party hearty. The word derives from the latin convivum (banquet) . Convivum itself derives from the latin verb vivare which means to live.
_______________________________
